A tycoon game is a business simulation where you own the enterprise: you buy or build the things that make money, set them running, spend the profit on more of them, and the size of the business is the score. Every decision is a version of one question: which purchase pays for itself fastest? The word arrived as a title convention in the 1990s and now covers everything from a park builder on PC to a phone game that earns in your pocket, which is why the term confuses people. Below is the line between the neighbouring genres, and six games that each show one type.
Tycoon vs idle vs management: the three overlapping circles #
Three labels get used for the same shelf. Management games are about running a system of people and resources: a colony, a hospital, a football squad. Tycoon games are the money-first part of that circle, where profit is the scoreboard and you own what you manage. Idle games are defined by time rather than subject, because progress continues while you are away.
The overlaps are what people shop for. Game Dev Tycoon and Two Point Hospital are tycoon and management at once; Idle Miner Tycoon and our own game are tycoon and idle. Cookie Clicker is an idle game with no business, only a number. A colony sim is a management game where survival, not profit, decides the outcome.
The best tycoon game on the Play Store depends on what you mean by tycoon #
If you mean a simulation you pay for once: RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic or Game Dev Tycoon, complete, paid, no ads, no timers. If you mean a free game that runs in the background, Idle Miner Tycoon has the most content of the idle tycoons, and our own Idle Sports Stadium Tycoon is in that group, built around stadiums and a story. If you mean the best game on the shelf however it is sold, still RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic; the case is in the best tycoon games list.
A short history: from Transport Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon to idle tycoons on phones #
Chris Sawyer released Transport Tycoon in 1994: rail, road, sea and air networks connecting industries across a map, with the word in the title. He then wrote RollerCoaster Tycoon, released in 1999, which became the genre’s defining work, with individually simulated guests and scenarios that taught by failure.
Through the 2000s the pattern spread to nearly every subject that could be owned and the word became a suffix. The centre of gravity then moved twice: to PC studios building deeper simulations, the branch leading to Planet Coaster 2, and then, much larger commercially, to phones, where the ownership fantasy met the idle loop. That second branch is what most people mean in an app store today.

Tycoon game types, one example each
Which type do you want? #
If the answer is “build the thing and watch people react”, start with RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic. If it is “run the business and read the numbers”, Game Dev Tycoon. If it is “something growing while I get on with my day”, you want an idle tycoon: our best idle tycoon games list covers that branch.
For the whole field, see the best tycoon games. Our own game sits in the idle branch, on our home page.
About these examples
What follows is a taxonomy, not a ranking. Each game is here because it shows one type clearly, so the numbers are an order of presentation and nothing more. For an actual ranking, see the best tycoon games.
The definitions come from how these games are built and sold, not from how stores file them: store categories put a park builder and a tapping game on one shelf.
How these were compared: we reviewed official store listings, developer information, player reviews and genre conventions, and applied the same criteria to every game. We have not independently play-tested every title here.
