The classic sims (RollerCoaster Tycoon, Game Dev Tycoon, Two Point Hospital) make you manage; the idle tycoons that took over phones (Idle Miner Tycoon, AdVenture Capitalist, our own Idle Sports Stadium Tycoon) do the running for you. Game Dev Tycoon is a tight, funny, twenty-hour management game with a brilliant final act, and the mobile version is a one-time purchase with no compromises. Its piracy easter egg (pirated copies fail because of piracy) is still the best joke in the genre.

Weak spot

Short, and replays lose the surprise. Late-game strategy is solved quickly.

The theme is not for everyone, and the mobile port is best on a tablet, not a phone.

“Tycoon” spans two very different things now. The classic tycoon sim (RollerCoaster Tycoon, Game Dev Tycoon, Two Point Hospital) is a management game where you place, price and staff things and watch simulated customers react. The idle tycoon (Idle Miner Tycoon, AdVenture Capitalist, our own Idle Sports Stadium Tycoon) keeps the buy-upgrade-expand fantasy but runs the simulation for you between sessions. This list ranks both, labels each entry, and tells you which platform it is best on.

Criteria: depth of decisions (are you managing or just buying?), fairness (a paid game must be worth its price; a free one must not wall progress), longevity (how long until it stops surprising you), and feel (does watching your empire grow feel good?).
